"Zen out" in Kamakura

Zen AM: A trade exclusive experience in Kamakura

Under an hour from central Tokyo by train, the ancient capital of Japan, Kamakura is one of Japan's most beautiful cultural hubs, packed with temples, shrines and seasonal festivals. It is also where Zen really first flourished in Japan, as did much of the associated culture including meditation, tea ceremony, the garden aesthetic and vegetarian cuisine. Supported by its proximity to Tokyo, it has developed a "scene" for the elite practitioners of these Zen related cultures, a few of whom are willing and able to work with the travel trade to create unique, immersive experience for travellers.

Also in recent years Kamakura also has a growing number of characterful accommodation options that offer an excellent alternative, more tranquil base to Tokyo.

Below we have selected a flagship experience and accommodation option that together will give visitors the chance to connect deeply with Zen and the unique "vibe" of Kamakura.

Zen AM - Live and breathe Zen, this morning

Issho Fujita is a Zen practitioner, author, translator, and embodiment of Zen, known for his unique and entertaining zazen (zen meditation) instruction. After teaching Zen for 18 years at various universities and meditation centers in the U.S., he continues to host experimental zazen sessions throughout Japan, attracting attention from Japan and abroad. In a travel trade exclusive, Issho-san offers a holistic experience including mindful walking, body-mind coordination practice, zazen, and "Zen dining". Not only will this deepen physical, mental, and spiritual fulfilment, but also it will help you get to the core of traditional Japanese culture and way of living.

Accommodation: COCON

Located just a short walk from Kamakura-gu Shrine, founded by Emperor Meiji, COCON is nestled in the peaceful Nikaido area, surrounded by historical sites and lush greenery. This accommodation is a fully renovated 160 year old traditional Japanese house, with only two groups of guests hosted per night by a dedicated English-speaking concierge service. A stay here also includes wholesome cuisine prepared and served onsite by a private chef working in an open kitchen.

COCON works perfectly for families and/or groups of friends wishing for a truly memorable and intimate stay in rural Japan without the hassle of travelling too far off the beaten track. Given that Haneda airport is just 45 minutes away by car and just over an hour by train, it would make a lot of sense as a highly immersive and relaxing "sayonara" stay.
