One of Kamakura’s most iconic Buddhist temples, Hase-Dera, offers a trade exclusive insider tour by merry Monk, Misaka-san.

Misaka-san, after a long career in television production, found his true calling as a monk who wishes to convey Buddhism in a less austere, more accessible form particularly to international visitors.



About Hasedera:


With its pristine spring cherry blossom vibrant summer hydrangea and the rich ochres of its summer leaves, Hasedera is one of the most well-known temples of Kamakura. It is also home to a majestic camphor-wood statue of the Bodhissatva Eleven-Headed Kannon – more than 1200 years old. Completed in the 8th century this venerable temple complex affords gorgeous panoramic views of Sagami Bay and the cityscape of Kamakura.



The experience:


This 90–120-minute tour offers our monk’s insights into the most beautiful and fascinating part of the temple complex, including its mysterious cave network and stunning garden, said to depict Buddhist paradise or “Pure Land”.  


Also exclusive to this tour, will be a welcome to get close to the Bodhissatva statue (usually off-limits to the public) to receive a blessing and prayer for protection from the Eleven-headed Kannon.


There is also the option participate in the meditative practice of sutra copying and tracing some of the temples carvings. Finally Matcha will be served at “kaiko-an” restaurant of the temple along with a souvenir.
